With today’s global environment and the many disparate and dynamic challenges that managers face today, coming up with a neat short list of “top management topics” will always be challenging and subject to change. Hence, when we sought to establish this part of the Resource Center, we had to set some criteria (and at least do an okay job at applying them):
- First, the topic had to be specific to the contemporary period and not something that has been enduring, as those would or should have been addressed in established organizational theories (Aisle B).
- Second, the topic had to be broadly applicable, such that it affects different types of organizations and industries — such as private and public sector, manufacturing and service, etc. If it was too peculiar to one setting, it did not qualify.
- We also wanted the topic to be about something integrative within organizations, not just focused on one part of it. For example, we looked at personnel matters from the perspective of the whole organization from leadership to front line and not just about the human resources function inside the organization.
We then grouped different topics together based on common themes and alignment with established scholarly literature streams and popular books. This made it easier for us to identify texts that could be considered “foundational” or “central” to the topic, major areas of research related to the topic, and general challenges that practitioners face from which additional research could be sought.
The results are that we offer the following “racks,” each representing a major topic of interest for contemporary organizational scholars and practitioners. We expect that these have some enduring quality and are not topics that will disappear off the management radar anytime soon. If a topic of interest to you is not listed, it may be included within one of the racks. You are also welcome to provide feedback and suggestions.
