Hi, and welcome to Talking About Organizations. This is a special message about what is to come during the rest of 2022!
For more than six years now, we have been bringing you lively and thought-provoking examinations of classic texts in organization theory and management science. In 2021, we released thirteen episodes focused on comparative organizational analysis, job design, management education, bureaucracy, innovation, organization design, and other topics. We also featured historical works including Alfred Chandler’s historical look at emergence of management in industry and Jane Addams’ enlightening commentary of the Pullman Railroad Strike that served as a foundational piece on pragmatism thinking. And we also released two conference episodes, one being the keynote address on diversity and inclusion from the European Group for Organization Studies’ 2021 Annual Colloquium, and the other being of a Professional Development Workshop about six female organizational scholars from the Academy of Management’s annual meeting. This last event reflects our mission of not just bringing the classics to life, but also broadening the canon. We hope to do even more work on this front in the future.
As we enter our seventh year, we recognize the treasure trove of material that we have collected – not just podcast episodes but also commentaries from listeners, and collections of articles and resources from the journal Management Learning, one of our leading sponsors. And so, along with continuing our monthly podcast releases, we are actively looking for ways to turn our program and website into a sort of digital library open for anyone interested in organization theory and management science. Our goal is to expand the website to include resources to help new students and practitioners navigate the ever-expanding waters of the management canon. We started building new web pages that introduce and explain some of the leading theories and schools of thought and connect them over time. But this will be a large and long-term effort.
An effort we hope you, dear listeners, may help us with! We do not have the expertise nor the means to do it alone. We are all volunteers, doing this because it is our passion. And we do not cover the full breadth of fields and subfields out there. If you enjoy the program and would like to help, please reach out to us.
As a first step, we are offering a short two-minute survey – the link to which is available here. The survey is open from Monday, February 21st to Sunday, March 13th due to high participation thus far! And one lucky participant will win their own copy of March & Simon’s Organizations as a thank you. Meanwhile, you can always find us on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter under Talking About Organizations, or you can message me directly on via email at tompgalvin@gwu.edu. We look forward to hearing from you! Help us make Talking about Organizations an even better resource to navigate the ever-expanding waters of organization and management scholarship.
Best wishes for happiness and good health over the remainder of 2022!
